Huronia Community Foundation Strategic Plan 2024 - 2027

Huronia Community Foundation is a trusted and respected philanthropic leader and is focused and committed to building a strong community that is a better place to live. With a clear vision for a financially robust future, a mission rooted in leadership and generosity, and values centered on integrity, openness, inclusiveness, and collaboration, HCF is dedicated to fostering a vibrant, caring community for generations to come.

Our strategic plan for 2024-2027 is centred around three core pillars: transforming leadership, inspiring community impact, and growing donor services. Our purpose is to enhance the quality of life in North Simcoe through philanthropy and collaboration, creating lasting change in the communities we serve.

Transform Leadership

We are committed to building a forward-thinking, high-performing organization that is recognized as a philanthropic leader. By strengthening board composition, improving governance, and fostering partnerships with local charities and funders, HCF aims to amplify its impact and address the needs identified in our Vital Signs© report.

Inspire Community Impact

HCF strives to increase trust and awareness across the region, ensuring that more residents understand the importance of our work. Through storytelling, community engagement, and clear messaging, we will highlight the far-reaching effects of our grants and foster stronger relationships with leaders, agencies, and cultural groups.

Grow Donor Services

To meet the evolving needs of our community, HCF will expand its endowment funds, focusing on unrestricted funds that allow for greater flexibility in grant-making. We will strengthen donor relationships by creating personalized giving opportunities, sharing donor impact stories, and educating financial professionals about how HCF supports philanthropic goals.

ACTION PLAN

Transform

Build a high functioning forward thinking organization that is recognized as a philanthropic leader.

Action Steps

  • Increase the reach of the board and strengthen the board composition. Expand the orientation process to be clear on roles and responsibilities.
  • Develop a framework to measure effectiveness, including governance functioning, focusing the role of staff and measuring impact on community needs identified in Vital Signs reports
  • Explore with local charities their needs and the opportunities to learn, share and grow together.
  • Create meaningful relationships with other funders including exploring joint funding opportunities: ie Rotary, municipalities, private foundations
  • Collaborate with other Community Foundations and Community Foundations Canada to learn and grow
  • Explore opportunities to involve other organizations in HCF work (students, interns, corporate volunteers)

Inspire

Increase community trust, awareness and understanding of the HCF.

Action Steps

  • Increase the reach of funding opportunities within the community and explore who is not applying or does not have a relationship with the Foundation.
  • Create clear messaging that highlights the importance and broad reach of the community foundation and its impact.
  • Develop a storytelling strategy that connects the impact and results of the Foundation, includes history (why of the CF) and celebrates successes. Highlight board members and staff and their personal commitments and passion for the Foundation.
  • Build a strong sense of community by strengthening relationships with leaders, cultural groups, agencies and community, sharing the value and impact of the Foundation, and reaching into communities that are quiet and not aware of the foundation.
  • Leverage the Vital Signs report to raise the profile of the Foundation, guide donors on community needs and provide specific topics to focus grant-making priorities and engagement of all organizations.

Grow

Build endowment funds, specifically unrestricted funds, to more effectively support operations and grant-making to impact community needs.

Action Steps

  • Cultivate lifelong donors by collecting donor feedback and implementing an engagement plan to strengthen donor relationships (newsletters, events, outreach and invitations to HCF events).
  • Include QR code/donate now message in all communications.
  • Streamline and standardize the message to fund sponsors and potential donors.
  • Implement a fund development strategy to grow the assets of the Foundation through a 50% increase in annual donations to HCF endowment funds with a priority on unrestricted funds.
  • Create a menu for giving, starting with how to create a fund, give to a fund, estate planning, corporate giving options, and how a donor can align giving to the Foundation with a cause important to them, including various fund options, including endowment, flow-through, spend down funds.
  • Empower donors to be ambassadors by creating donor stories that link to grants/impact. Share stories with donors and include them within the Communications Strategy.
  • Educate Professionals (CPAs, Lawyers and Financial Advisors) on the role/work of HCF and how the Foundation helps their clients meet their philanthropic goals.
