The Youth and Philanthropy Initiative (YPI) is an inclusive, multi-award-winning participatory grant-making program that grows compassionate communities by connecting secondary students to social issues, local charities, and philanthropy at a pivotal stage in their adolescence. YPI is an idea. YPI is a program. YPI is a platform. With every grant awarded through the school-based competition, YPI channels financial resources, public awareness, and volunteers to local charities, while sparking the social conscience of secondary school students, building their character, and developing their life and workplace skills.
The 2019/20 YPI program in partnership with Huronia Community Foundation, LabX Media Group and the participating school Georgian Bay District Secondary School provided five local charities with additional funding.
Through the engagement of 135 students and 4 educators, who made 27 charity presentations which were researched, developed and delivered by students, an estimated 945 additional people (e.g. parents, siblings, family) learned about social issues and the work of local charities. (Based on students’ self-reported average of talking to 7 people outside of school about their project.)
